While bartending a while back at a restaurant on Magazine St., a gentleman walked in, sat at the bar and ordered a glass of lemonade.  His momentary visit inside to escape the summer heat turned into a discussion about neighborhood restaurants and dining in New Orleans that lasted several hours.  It wasn't long before he introduced himself as Kevin R. Roberts, the author of the popular New Orleans Neighborhood Restaurant Guide.  Before he left the restaurant that day, he gave me a copy, which he momentarily "borrowed back" to give Kate Hudson (who was sitting at the bar with us) a quiz about New Orleans, titled "Giddy About Go Cups (The Tourist Test)" found in the back of the book.

What I soon discovered was a book packed with un-biased commentary and photos of the some of the best neighborhood restaurants in New Orleans.  I am on my journey through the book to dine at each of the restaurants and I suggest you do the same.  Whether you are a lifelong resident or visiting for the weekend, there isn't a better book to consult for honest and entertaining advice on dining in New Orleans.

The retail price is $7.50 and shipping and handling is $1.49 for a total price of $8.99 - a much better deal than a bad meal!

Dinner Mon-Sat

Proprietor Jacques Leonardi and Chef Austin Leslie run this funky, cramped cafe that seems like a hybrid cross between Uglesich's and the House of Blues.  Leslie & Leonardi are the Gilbert and Sullivan of soul food.  You can enjoy the wait with Hank in the gregarious bar, decorated with artwork by Frenchy and Dr. Bob.  Chef Jacques Leonardi is another New Yorker who liked it and stayed.  He was lucky to have learned from Chef Paul Prudhomme.  Chef Austin is a contemporary of Prudhomme's and was the soul food icon behind the beloved Chez Helene.  Together, this team has produced a solid hit with tourists and locals.  After dinner, step next door to the world famous Maple Leaf Bar for some music.  The Leaf ain't pretty, but it is legit.  After a night on Oak Street, you'll agree with Dorothy, "We're not in Kansas anymore."
